Anti-Bullying

At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that every child has the right to feel safe, respected and valued.

Bullying has no place in our school.

Our Catholic faith teaches us that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness and compassion. We are committed to building a community where everyone belongs, where differences are celebrated and where every child feels confident to be themselves.

Our aim is not simply to respond to bullying when it happens.

Our aim is to build a culture where kindness, respect and positive relationships make bullying far less likely to happen in the first place.

Intent

Our intention is to create a school community where every child feels emotionally and physically safe, knows they belong and understands that kindness is both expected and celebrated.

We want our children to develop empathy, compassion and the confidence to stand up for what is right. We believe that children should never be passive bystanders; they should become active upstanders who support others, challenge unkindness appropriately and seek help whenever someone is being hurt.

We are committed to helping children understand the difference between friendship difficulties, conflict and bullying, ensuring they develop the emotional maturity to resolve disagreements respectfully while recognising when behaviour has become unacceptable.

Our approach is rooted in the belief that words matter, relationships matter and people matter.

Through The St Bernard's Way, we teach children that every interaction is an opportunity to show respect, kindness, forgiveness and responsibility.

Implementation

Creating a culture of kindness begins with relationships.

Adults model respectful communication, calm interactions and compassionate responses every day. Children experience a school where they are known well, listened to carefully and encouraged to speak openly about their worries.

Our behaviour curriculum deliberately teaches children how to build healthy friendships, resolve conflict peacefully, recognise the impact of their words and actions and understand that everyone deserves dignity and respect.

Our Words Matter initiative reinforces the importance of positive language and respectful communication. Children learn that words have the power to build others up or cause lasting harm, and they are encouraged to choose language that reflects kindness, encouragement and compassion.

Through our whole-school approach of Hearts, Bodies, Voices, Minds Ready, children develop emotional regulation, self-awareness, communication skills and empathy. These skills help them manage disagreements constructively and understand the feelings and perspectives of others.

Our Peer Mediators play an important role in supporting positive playtimes, helping younger children resolve minor disagreements and promoting peaceful relationships across the school. Alongside our wider pupil leadership teams, they help create a culture where children actively care for one another and contribute positively to school life.

Through our curriculum, worship, Religious Education, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education and Catholic Social Teaching, children regularly explore themes such as friendship, diversity, equality, forgiveness, justice, courage and inclusion. These opportunities help children understand that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and that differences should always be respected.

When concerns arise, they are taken seriously and addressed promptly. We work closely with children, families and staff to investigate concerns carefully, provide appropriate support and restore relationships wherever possible. Where bullying is identified, we act decisively to protect those affected while helping children understand the impact of their behaviour and take responsibility for changing it.

Impact

The impact of our approach is reflected in the culture of our school.

Children feel safe because they know they are surrounded by adults who care deeply about them and peers who understand the importance of kindness and respect.

Children confidently speak about trusted adults, positive friendships and the importance of treating everyone with dignity. They understand the difference between everyday disagreements and bullying, and they know how to seek help if they or someone else needs support.

Children increasingly demonstrate empathy, respect and compassion in their daily interactions. They celebrate one another's successes, include others in play and recognise that everyone has something valuable to contribute to our community.

Our children understand that their words have power. They communicate thoughtfully, listen respectfully and recognise that kindness is shown not only through actions but also through the way we speak to one another.

Families know that concerns will always be listened to with care, investigated thoroughly and addressed with honesty, fairness and professionalism. They experience a school where relationships are valued and where children are supported to learn from mistakes, repair harm and grow in character.

Ultimately, our children leave St Bernard's with a clear understanding that courage is found not in standing against others but in standing alongside them.

They know that kindness is a strength.

They know that respect is a choice.

They know that every person deserves to belong.

That is the community we are building.

That is The St Bernard's Way.
