Before we see data, we see a child. Before we see barriers, we see potential. Before we ask what a child can achieve, we ask how we can help them flourish.

At St Bernard's RC Primary School, inclusion is not a programme, an intervention or a department.

It is the way we choose to see children.

The St Bernard’s Way to Flourishing

We believe that every child is uniquely created by God, with inherent dignity, individual gifts and limitless potential. Every child has their own story, their own strengths and their own challenges. Our role is not to ask children to fit our school; it is to shape our school so that every child can flourish within it.

Our vision is simple:

Every child belongs.   Every child matters.   Every child can succeed.

This is how we continue becoming the school God wants us to be.

Intent

Our intention is to build a school where every child experiences genuine belonging and where no barrier—whether academic, social, emotional, physical or personal—prevents them from flourishing.

We believe that inclusion and excellence are inseparable. High expectations are not reserved for some children; they are the entitlement of every child. We are ambitious for all because we believe every child is capable of growth when they are understood, supported and challenged appropriately.

Our approach begins with relationships. We seek first to know every child—their experiences, interests, strengths, fears and aspirations—because meaningful learning can only happen when children feel safe, valued and understood.

Our work is guided by four simple principles:

• Every child deserves to belong.
• Every child deserves excellent teaching.
• Every child deserves the opportunity to flourish.

These principles shape every decision we make, from curriculum design and classroom practice to behaviour, pastoral care, attendance and leadership.

We are committed to developing children whose hearts, bodies, voices and minds are ready to learn, recognising that education is about developing the whole person and preparing children not only for secondary school, but for life.

Implementation

Inclusion is everyone's responsibility at St Bernard's.

It begins long before learning starts each morning. Children are welcomed warmly into school, greeted by adults who know them well and supported to feel emotionally safe and ready for the day ahead.

Across our classrooms, high-quality teaching is our first response to meeting need. Lessons are carefully designed so that all children can access ambitious learning through excellent modelling, scaffolded support, adaptive teaching, purposeful questioning and carefully planned opportunities for success. We do not lower expectations; we remove barriers.

Our universal approach ensures that every child benefits from predictable routines, strong relationships, clear expectations and classrooms where children feel secure enough to take risks in their learning. The principles of Hearts, Bodies, Voices, Minds Ready underpin daily practice, recognising that emotional regulation, physical wellbeing, communication and cognitive readiness are essential foundations for success.

Where additional support is needed, we respond early and thoughtfully. Through targeted interventions, personalised provision, specialist advice and close partnership with families, we ensure that support is tailored to individual needs while maintaining each child's full participation in the life of the school.

Our relational approach to behaviour reflects our belief that behaviour is a form of communication. We seek to understand before we judge, to restore rather than simply punish and to help children develop the skills they need to regulate emotions, build positive relationships and make successful choices. Alongside compassion sits consistency, helping every child to understand boundaries, experience fairness and feel secure.

Inclusion extends far beyond the classroom. Through enrichment opportunities, pupil leadership, sport, worship, educational visits and community involvement, we work hard to ensure that every child experiences success, develops confidence and discovers their unique contribution to our school family.

Our staff continually reflect on their practice, learn from research, collaborate with specialists and work closely with families because we believe inclusion is not a destination—it is an ongoing commitment to continual improvement.

Impact

The impact of our Inclusion Strategy is seen every day in the culture of our school.

Children know that they belong.

They know they are valued for who they are rather than judged by the barriers they face. They develop confidence because they experience success. They become resilient because adults believe in them even when they struggle to believe in themselves.

Our classrooms are calm, purposeful and welcoming places where differences are understood, celebrated and respected. Children learn alongside one another, support one another and recognise that everyone learns differently.

Children speak confidently about kindness, fairness, respect and responsibility because these values are modelled consistently throughout school life. They understand that everyone has strengths, everyone needs help at times and everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Families experience a school that listens, works in partnership and seeks solutions together. Staff share a common understanding that inclusion is not the responsibility of one team but the responsibility of every adult.

As a result, children grow not only in their academic achievement but also in confidence, independence, compassion and hope. They leave St Bernard's knowing that they are loved by God, proud of who they are and ready to embrace the next stage of their education with courage and purpose.

Our measure of success is not simply the progress children make in books.

It is the people they become.

Children who know they belong.

Children who are ready to make a positive difference in the world.
