Behaviour and Personal Development
Behaviour and Personal Development
At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that behaviour is about far more than following rules.
It is about forming character.
Every interaction, every conversation and every restorative moment is an opportunity to help children grow into compassionate, responsible and confident young people who understand both their rights and their responsibilities within God's family.
Our approach is rooted in our Catholic mission, guided by The St Bernard's Way and strengthened through our commitment to nurture, inclusion and high expectations.
We believe children flourish when they experience both unconditional care and consistent boundaries.
Intent
Our intention is to create a school where every child feels safe, respected, valued and ready to learn.
We believe that positive behaviour grows from strong relationships, emotional security, effective communication and a genuine sense of belonging. Children learn best when they know they are understood, when adults believe in them and when expectations are clear, fair and consistently applied.
Our vision is not simply to manage behaviour but to develop character.
We want every child to become kind, resilient, respectful and responsible. We want them to develop empathy, self-control, perseverance, confidence and the ability to contribute positively to their community.
Our behaviour culture is founded on three equally important beliefs:
- Every child deserves dignity and respect.
- Every child is capable of making positive choices.
- Every child must be supported and challenged to become the very best version of themselves.
As a proud Nurture UK School, we recognise that behaviour is often a form of communication. We understand that children's experiences, relationships and emotions influence how they behave. We therefore seek first to understand before responding, helping children develop the skills they need to regulate emotions, build relationships and succeed within school and beyond.
At the same time, we believe that all children deserve calm classrooms, consistent routines and high expectations. Inclusion is never achieved by lowering standards; it is achieved by giving every child the support they need to reach them.
Implementation
Positive relationships are the foundation of everything we do.
Every child is welcomed warmly each morning because we know that feeling seen, known and valued is the first step towards successful learning. Staff invest time in building trusting relationships with children and families, recognising that partnership is essential in helping children thrive.
Our daily routines promote readiness through our whole-school approach of Hearts, Bodies, Voices, Minds Ready. Children learn to recognise and regulate their emotions, prepare themselves for learning and understand the impact their behaviour has on others.
Our behaviour curriculum is taught deliberately and consistently. Through The St Bernard's Way, children learn what respect, kindness, responsibility, perseverance and forgiveness look like in practice. These values are modelled by adults and reinforced throughout every aspect of school life.
As a Nurture UK School, we ensure that nurture principles underpin our provision. We recognise that children's social and emotional development is as important as their academic learning. Calm environments, predictable routines, trusted relationships and opportunities for reflection help children feel emotionally secure and ready to succeed.
Communication is central to our approach. Drawing upon our Elklan training, adults use supportive communication strategies that make learning and expectations accessible for all children. Visual supports, clear language, modelling, processing time, structured conversations and purposeful vocabulary development enable children to understand, express themselves confidently and participate fully in school life.
Where children experience additional barriers, support is personalised. Staff seek to understand the reasons behind behaviours, working closely with families and external professionals to provide appropriate interventions while maintaining high expectations and full inclusion within school life.
Positive behaviour is recognised and celebrated through our relational rewards systems, opportunities for pupil leadership and daily encouragement. Children are praised not only for achievement but also for effort, resilience, kindness, honesty and service to others.
When mistakes occur, we respond consistently and fairly. Restorative conversations help children understand the impact of their actions, repair relationships and learn from their experiences. Consequences are proportionate and support children to make better choices in the future. Forgiveness, reconciliation and personal responsibility remain at the heart of our practice.
Beyond behaviour, personal development is woven throughout the curriculum and wider life of the school. Through worship, Catholic Social Teaching, enrichment opportunities, sport, pupil leadership, educational visits, charitable work and wider experiences, children develop confidence, independence, leadership, resilience and a strong moral compass.
Impact
The impact of our approach is reflected in the culture of our school.
Children feel safe because relationships are built on trust, consistency and mutual respect. They know that adults care deeply about them while also believing in their ability to succeed.
Our classrooms are calm, purposeful and welcoming. Children understand routines, demonstrate positive learning behaviours and show increasing independence, resilience and self-regulation.
Children speak respectfully to adults and one another. They understand that words have power and that kindness, forgiveness and compassion are active choices. They develop confidence in expressing their thoughts, feelings and ideas because communication is valued and nurtured throughout school life.
Children learn to recognise and manage emotions, resolve disagreements peacefully and take responsibility for their behaviour. They understand that mistakes are opportunities to learn and that everyone can grow with support, reflection and perseverance.
Personal development is evident in every aspect of school life. Children willingly take on leadership roles, serve others, celebrate diversity, care for God's creation and contribute positively to their school and wider community. They develop the confidence to use their voices for good while showing humility, empathy and respect for others.
Families experience a school where children are known as individuals, where relationships matter and where support is offered with compassion, honesty and hope.
Ultimately, our children leave St Bernard's with far more than academic knowledge.
They leave with strong character.
They leave with confidence.
They leave with compassion.
They leave understanding that true success is measured not simply by what they achieve, but by the people they become.
That is The St Bernard's Way.
This is how we continue becoming the school God wants us to be.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
