At St Bernard's RC Primary School, safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.

More importantly, it is everyone's commitment.

Every child has the right to feel safe, valued, listened to and protected. Our Catholic faith reminds us that every child is a precious gift from God, deserving of dignity, compassion and unconditional care.

Safeguarding is therefore not simply a statutory duty—it is an expression of our mission.

It shapes the culture of our school, the relationships we build, the decisions we make and the environment we create each day.

We believe that children flourish when they feel safe.

Everything else begins there.

Intent

Our intention is to create a school where every child feels physically safe, emotionally secure and confident that there is always a trusted adult who will listen, care and act in their best interests.

We are committed to developing a culture where safeguarding is proactive rather than reactive. We work to build trusting relationships so that children feel confident to speak about worries, ask for help and know that they will always be taken seriously.

Safeguarding at St Bernard's extends far beyond child protection procedures.

It includes promoting positive mental health, supporting emotional wellbeing, encouraging regular attendance, developing healthy relationships, teaching children to stay safe online, helping them understand healthy choices and creating an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.

We believe safeguarding is strengthened through partnership. By working closely with families, governors, external agencies and the wider community, we seek to ensure that every child receives the care, protection and support they need to flourish.

Implementation

Safeguarding is woven into every aspect of school life.

Strong relationships are the foundation of our approach. Staff know children well, recognise that every child has their own story and understand the importance of noticing even the smallest changes in presentation, behaviour or wellbeing.

Every member of staff receives regular safeguarding training and understands their responsibility to remain vigilant, report concerns promptly and place the welfare of children above all else. Safeguarding is regularly revisited through professional development so that it remains central to our daily practice.

Children learn about keeping themselves safe through a carefully planned curriculum that includes Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, Relationships Education, online safety, worship, Catholic Social Teaching and wider enrichment experiences. They are taught how to recognise risks, build healthy relationships, respect themselves and others and seek help whenever they need it.

Our nurturing culture supports children's emotional wellbeing through trusted relationships, predictable routines and opportunities to develop emotional regulation and resilience. Our whole-school approach of Hearts, Bodies, Voices, Minds Ready helps children understand themselves, communicate effectively and develop the confidence to make positive choices.

Attendance is viewed as a safeguarding priority. We work compassionately but robustly with families to ensure that every child benefits from the safety, stability and opportunities that regular school attendance provides.

Our commitment to inclusion means that children who may be particularly vulnerable receive carefully planned support through close collaboration with families and external professionals. We work alongside agencies including Children's Services, health professionals, Educational Psychology, CAMHS, Early Help and other specialist services to ensure children receive coordinated support whenever needed.

Safeguarding also means creating an environment where children feel that they belong. Through our behaviour curriculum, restorative practice, anti-bullying work, pupil leadership, Words Matter initiative and Catholic ethos, we promote kindness, respect, dignity and responsibility throughout our community.

Robust safeguarding procedures, safer recruitment practices, secure record keeping and clear reporting systems ensure that statutory responsibilities are fulfilled to the highest standard, giving families confidence that their children are safe in our care.

Impact

The impact of safeguarding at St Bernard's is reflected in the confidence, security and wellbeing of our children.

Children know that they are cared for.

They know that adults listen to them, believe them and will always act to keep them safe.

Our children speak confidently about trusted adults, healthy relationships, online safety and how to seek help if something worries them. They understand that safeguarding is not about being frightened but about knowing how to stay safe and support one another.

Children feel secure because relationships are built upon trust, consistency and genuine care. They know that mistakes can be repaired, worries can be shared and challenges can be overcome with the support of adults who believe in them.

Families experience a school that works alongside them with honesty, compassion and professionalism. They know that safeguarding decisions are always made with the best interests of children at heart and that partnership is valued throughout every stage of their child's journey.

Ultimately, safeguarding enables every other aspect of school life to flourish.
