Design and Technology
Design & Technology – Designing to Serve Others
Every invention begins with an idea.
Every great design begins with a problem that needs solving.
At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that Design & Technology is about much more than making products.
It is about creativity with purpose.
It is about solving problems.
It is about using our God-given gifts to improve the lives of others.
Through Design & Technology, children discover that thoughtful design has the power to make everyday life safer, healthier, easier and more enjoyable.
Intent
Our intention is to develop creative, resilient and innovative designers who understand that good design begins with understanding people's needs.
We want every child to become a confident problem-solver who is able to design, make and evaluate purposeful products while developing practical skills, technical knowledge and creative thinking.
Our curriculum encourages children to think carefully about the purpose of design, recognising that successful products are created not simply because they look attractive but because they improve people's lives.
Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching, we encourage children to understand that innovation should always serve the common good. Through thoughtful design, children consider how their ideas can help others, care for God's creation and contribute positively to the wider world.
We believe that every child has the ability to think creatively, persevere through challenges and develop practical solutions to real-life problems.
Ultimately, we want every child to understand that the best designers begin not with materials, but with compassion.
Implementation
Our Design & Technology curriculum is carefully sequenced to develop children's designing, making and evaluating skills progressively throughout their primary education.
Children work through the complete design process by identifying needs, generating ideas, planning carefully, selecting appropriate materials, creating purposeful products and evaluating how successfully their designs meet their intended purpose.
Practical learning is central to every unit. Children develop increasing confidence in using tools, equipment and materials safely while learning techniques across food technology, textiles, structures and mechanical systems.
Children are encouraged to think critically throughout the design process. They learn that successful designers continually improve their work by testing ideas, reflecting upon outcomes and refining their designs.
Cooking and nutrition form an important part of the curriculum, helping children understand healthy eating, food preparation and the importance of making informed choices that support wellbeing.
Our curriculum encourages creativity alongside precision. Children learn that imagination and careful planning work together, allowing innovative ideas to become practical solutions.
Meaningful links are made across the curriculum. Scientific understanding informs design decisions, mathematical knowledge supports accurate measuring and construction, while artistic creativity inspires aesthetic design. Through these connections, children recognise that great design often brings together knowledge from many different disciplines.
Sustainability is woven throughout our curriculum. Inspired by Laudato Si' and our commitment to caring for God's creation, children are encouraged to consider the environmental impact of materials, waste and manufacturing, developing an appreciation of responsible design and sustainable choices.
Throughout every project, children are encouraged to ask one important question:
"How will this help someone?"
Impact
The impact of our Design & Technology curriculum is reflected in children who approach challenges with creativity, resilience and confidence.
Children become thoughtful designers who understand that successful products are created by listening carefully, thinking critically and continually improving ideas.
Children develop practical skills alongside increasing independence, learning to use tools safely, solve problems systematically and persevere when designs do not work first time.
Children grow in confidence because they understand that mistakes are part of every successful design journey. They learn to evaluate their work honestly, accept feedback positively and recognise that improvement comes through reflection and determination.
Our children understand that design has the power to improve people's lives. They recognise that creativity carries responsibility and that innovation should always seek to benefit others while respecting the environment.
Children leave St Bernard's with curiosity, confidence and the practical skills needed to approach future challenges creatively. They understand that thoughtful design begins with empathy and that the most successful ideas are those which place people at the centre.
Most importantly, our children leave believing that they can make a difference.
They can imagine.
They can design.
They can create.
They can improve the world around them.
Because every invention begins with a question.
Every solution begins with hope.
And every child has been given gifts that can be used in the service of others.
That is what it means to be a designer at St Bernard's.
This is how we continue becoming the school God wants us to be.
"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might."
