Week beginning 16th January

This term, the music unit for UKS2 is South and West African music and Year 6 have been learning the words to the song ‘Shosholoza’ in Ndebele. First, we sang ‘a cappella’ (not accompanied by any instruments) and then the children progressed to playing the accompanying chords on their glockenspiels. I'm sure you'll agree they gave a fantastic performance!

Shosholoza - LYRICS + Translation

"Shosholoza" is a Ndebele folk song that originated in what is now Zimbabwe but was popularised in South Africa. It was sung by Ndebele all-male migrant workers that were working in the South African mines in a call and response style.

The children had a go at making origami hummingbirds and although it was extremely tricky, they are proud to show off some of their masterpieces.
