History Curriculum Intent

At St Bernard’s, our History curriculum builds pupils’ knowledge, language and curiosity to understand the past and their place in the world. Recognising that many of our pupils have limited vocabulary and cultural experiences, we focus on explicit teaching of historical vocabulary, structured talk, and rich stories and sources that bring the past to life. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so pupils develop a secure sense of chronology, understand key historical concepts, and connect learning across periods and places. Through questioning, discussion and enquiry, pupils learn to think and communicate like historians—using evidence, reasoning and empathy. By the end of primary school, they know key events and people, can explain their significance, and see how history shapes who we are today.

Ultimately, our History curriculum equips pupils with knowledge, curiosity and perspective—enabling them to make sense of the world, value diversity, and engage critically with the past and the future.
