How can I support my child with SATS?

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we progress through the school year, I would like to provide guidance on how you can support your child with their SATs preparation. These assessments are an important part of your child’s learning journey, and with your support at home, we can help them feel confident, prepared, and motivated.

Accessing Resources at Home
Your child has been provided with login details for Purple Mash and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS). These platforms are excellent tools for practising key skills in a fun and interactive way. Purple Mash allows your child to complete a variety of learning activities, while TTRS helps build confidence and fluency in times tables—an essential skill for maths.

Additionally, I have updated the school website with a SATs Preparation tab, which can be accessed via the Children’s Page. Scroll down to Class Page: Year 6K to find resources covering:

  • Reading comprehension

  • SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar)

  • Spellings for the full year

  • Maths arithmetic

Tips for Supporting Your Child
Here are some practical ways you can help your child at home:

  1. Establish a Routine: Set aside regular, short periods each day for SATs practice. Consistency is more effective than long, infrequent sessions.

  2. Encourage a Positive Mindset: Praise effort over results. Remind your child that mistakes are a part of learning.

  3. Use the Resources Together: Ask your child to explain answers or work through problems with you. This reinforces understanding and promotes teamwork.

  4. Break Tasks into Manageable Steps: Encourage your child to focus on one topic or skill at a time, rather than feeling overwhelmed by everything at once.

  5. Incorporate Fun Practice: Use games, quizzes, or online platforms like TTRS to make learning enjoyable.

  6. Check Understanding: Discuss the activities your child completes on Purple Mash or the website and ask questions about what they learned.

  7. Early Preparation is Key: Starting revision early in the year reduces stress and builds confidence, giving your child the best opportunity to succeed.

Common Questions & Answers

Q: How long should my child spend on SATs practice each day?
A: Short, focused sessions of 15–30 minutes each day are often more effective than longer, infrequent sessions. Regular practice is key.

Q: What if my child struggles with a topic?
A: Encourage them to try again and break the topic into smaller steps. Use online resources or ask them to explain what they do understand. Mistakes are part of learning.

Q: How can I help with reading comprehension?
A: Ask your child to read a passage aloud and discuss the main points, vocabulary, and inference questions. Encourage them to explain their answers in their own words.

Q: Can SATs practice be fun?
A: Absolutely! Using games, quizzes, TTRS, or interactive activities on Purple Mash makes learning enjoyable and helps reinforce skills naturally.

Q: When should my child start revising?
A: The earlier the better! Starting revision now reduces stress, builds confidence, and ensures consistent progress throughout the year.

Your support at home plays a vital role in helping your child feel confident and prepared for SATs. By combining regular practice, encouragement, and a positive approach, we can help your child achieve their full potential.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey.

Kind regards,
Ms. Khan
