Week beginning 19th May
Tuesday was dedicated to work on the NSPCC, whose ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ campaign aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms. This includes bullying; the ability to recognise the signs of abuse; how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse; to make children aware of how to get help and the sources of help available to them, including Childline. We listened to relevant stories and completed activities, such as 'the worry sack' about the different types of worries a child might have and put these onto brick to represent how worries become hard to carry around. In addition, we engaged in very sensible class discussions to help the children understand that they all have the right to be kept safe and to know who they can talk to if they need support.
As part of our Pilgrims of Hope work, the children researched the life of Pope Francis before he became a pope and presented their information beautifully.
In our PSHE lessons, we have moved on from ‘Discrimination’ and begun our new topic on ‘How to overcome being frightened.’ We enjoyed watching a film called ‘Orion and the Dark’ about a boy who is scared of many things, but primarily the dark. The message being that fear is a natural emotion and inevitable part of life.
Finally, we ended our week with a fun and sunny Reward Morning comprising of craft, frisbee and cricket activities. Subsequently, we held our VE Day celebration afternoon where the children ate jam sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches and fairy cakes iced in red, white and blue. What a wonderful end to the half term!
