Art and Design
Art & Design – Creating Beauty, Expressing God's Gifts
Creativity is one of God's greatest gifts.
It allows us to imagine, create, express ourselves and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that Art & Design is about much more than learning artistic techniques.
It is about seeing the world differently.
It is about noticing beauty.
It is about expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas in ways that words alone cannot always achieve.
Through Art, children discover that every person has the ability to create something unique because every person has been uniquely created by God.
Intent
Our intention is to develop confident, creative and reflective artists who appreciate the beauty of God's creation and understand that creativity is a gift to be nurtured and shared.
We want every child to experience the joy of making, designing, experimenting and expressing themselves through a wide variety of artistic media.
Our curriculum encourages children to become curious, imaginative and resilient learners who are willing to take creative risks, explore new ideas and learn from the artistic process.
We believe that art helps children understand themselves and others. Through studying artists from different cultures, backgrounds and periods of history, children develop an appreciation of diversity while recognising the universal human desire to create, communicate and tell stories.
Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching, children are encouraged to consider how art can inspire hope, celebrate human dignity, challenge injustice and strengthen communities.
Ultimately, we want every child to understand that creativity is not reserved for a talented few.
It is part of what makes us human.
Implementation
Our Art & Design curriculum is carefully sequenced to develop children's artistic knowledge, practical skills and creative confidence throughout their primary years.
Children explore a wide range of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, collage and mixed media. Through regular opportunities to experiment, practise and refine techniques, children develop increasing control, independence and confidence.
Children study the work of significant artists, designers and craftspeople from a variety of cultures and historical periods. They learn to observe closely, discuss thoughtfully and reflect upon how artists communicate ideas, emotions and experiences through their work.
Sketchbooks play an important role within our curriculum, providing children with a safe space to experiment, develop ideas, take creative risks and reflect upon their own artistic journey. We celebrate the process of creating just as much as the finished outcome.
Lessons encourage children to observe carefully, ask questions, evaluate their own work and appreciate the creativity of others. Rich artistic vocabulary helps children discuss techniques, styles and artistic choices with increasing confidence.
Our curriculum makes meaningful links with other subjects, enabling children to express historical understanding, scientific observation, geographical knowledge and literary responses through creative expression.
Inspired by the beauty of God's creation, children regularly use the natural world as a source of inspiration. Through observation, outdoor learning and links with our Laudato Si' work, they develop appreciation for colour, pattern, texture and form while recognising their responsibility to care for our common home.
Throughout every lesson, children are encouraged to recognise that creativity grows through perseverance, reflection and joyful exploration rather than the pursuit of perfection.
Impact
The impact of our Art & Design curriculum is reflected in children who create with confidence, imagination and pride.
Children develop increasing technical skill alongside the confidence to express their own ideas creatively. They understand that artistic success is measured not by perfection but by thoughtful exploration, effort and personal expression.
Children become increasingly observant, learning to notice beauty, detail and pattern in both the natural world and the work of others. They develop the confidence to discuss art thoughtfully, appreciating different interpretations and recognising that creativity takes many forms.
Children learn to persevere when developing their ideas, understanding that creativity often grows through experimentation, reflection and refinement.
Through studying artists from across the world, pupils develop respect for different cultures and traditions while recognising that creativity is a universal language shared by all people.
Most importantly, our children leave St Bernard's believing that their creativity matters.
They understand that they have something unique to offer.
They know that beauty can inspire hope.
They recognise that art can communicate where words cannot.
And they discover that the greatest works of art begin with the courage to create.
Because every child has been created by God with imagination.
Every child has been given gifts to share.
Every child has the opportunity to make the world more beautiful.
That is what it means to be an artist at St Bernard's.
This is how we continue becoming the school God wants us to be.
"He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work."
