Computing – Creating, Connecting and Thinking Digitally

Technology has transformed the way we live, learn and communicate.

It connects people across the world, unlocks knowledge, inspires creativity and enables us to solve problems that once seemed impossible.

At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that Computing is about much more than learning to use computers.

It is about preparing children to thrive in a rapidly changing world with confidence, wisdom and integrity.

We want every child to understand that technology is a powerful tool.

Like all powerful tools, it should be used with knowledge, responsibility and compassion.

Intent

Our intention is to develop confident, creative and responsible digital citizens who understand how technology works, how it can improve lives and how it should be used safely and ethically.

We believe that every child should leave St Bernard's equipped with the digital knowledge and skills needed for the future while also developing the judgement to make wise choices in an increasingly connected world.

Our Computing curriculum encourages children to become problem-solvers, innovators and creators rather than simply consumers of technology.

Through coding, digital creativity, data handling and computer science, children learn to think logically, persevere through challenges and develop solutions to real-world problems.

Inspired by our Catholic faith and Catholic Social Teaching, we also encourage children to recognise that technology should always be used to promote human dignity, serve others and make the world a better place.

Ultimately, we want every child to understand that the most important part of technology is not the device itself.

It is the person using it.

Implementation

Our Computing curriculum is carefully planned to develop children's knowledge and understanding progressively as they move through the school.

Children learn the three key strands of Computing:

• Computer Science – understanding how computers work and developing computational thinking through coding and programming.
• Information Technology – using technology purposefully to create, organise, communicate and present information.
• Digital Literacy – developing the knowledge and judgement needed to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.

Lessons encourage children to explore, investigate and solve problems through practical experiences that develop creativity alongside technical understanding.

Children learn to break complex problems into manageable steps, recognise patterns, test solutions and improve their work through reflection and evaluation. These skills develop resilience, logical thinking and perseverance that extend far beyond Computing lessons.

Communication is central to our approach. Children collaborate, share ideas and present their work confidently, recognising that technology enables people to connect, create and communicate in powerful ways.

Our wider curriculum makes meaningful links between Computing and other subjects, enabling children to use technology to enhance learning, research information, present ideas creatively and deepen understanding across the curriculum.

Digital citizenship is woven throughout our provision. Closely linked with our Online Safety curriculum, children learn about respectful online communication, cyberbullying, privacy, misinformation, digital footprints, artificial intelligence and the responsibilities that accompany life in an increasingly digital society.

Our whole-school approach of Hearts, Bodies, Voices, Minds Ready underpins our Computing curriculum.

• Hearts Ready – using technology with kindness, empathy and respect.
• Bodies Ready – developing healthy and balanced approaches to screen time and wellbeing.
• Voices Ready – communicating responsibly, respectfully and positively online.
• Minds Ready – thinking critically, solving problems creatively and making informed digital choices.

Throughout every lesson, children are reminded that technology is most powerful when it is used to help others.

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum is reflected in confident children who use technology thoughtfully, creatively and responsibly.

Our children develop secure digital knowledge alongside increasingly sophisticated computational thinking. They approach technological challenges with curiosity, resilience and confidence, recognising that mistakes are an important part of learning and innovation.

Children become capable creators rather than passive users of technology. They use digital tools to communicate ideas, solve problems, collaborate effectively and present their learning with increasing creativity and independence.

Children understand that online behaviour should reflect the same values they demonstrate within school. They communicate respectfully, protect themselves and others online and understand the importance of honesty, kindness and responsibility in digital spaces.

Children also develop critical thinking skills that enable them to question information, evaluate sources and make informed decisions in an increasingly complex digital world.

Most importantly, our children leave St Bernard's understanding that technology should always be used for good.

They leave with the skills to create.

The confidence to innovate.

The wisdom to make responsible choices.

The integrity to use technology with compassion.

And the understanding that the greatest difference is never made by computers alone.

It is made by people who choose to use their knowledge in the service of others.

That is what it means to be a digital citizen at St Bernard's.
