French – Speaking to the World

Language has the power to bring people together.

It helps us to build friendships, understand different cultures and appreciate the richness and diversity of God's world.

At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that learning French is about much more than learning new vocabulary or grammar.

It is about opening doors.

It is about developing curiosity, confidence and respect for people whose lives, cultures and experiences may be different from our own.

Every new word learned is another opportunity to connect with the wider world.

Intent

Our intention is to develop confident, curious and enthusiastic language learners who enjoy communicating with others and appreciate the value of different languages and cultures.

We want children to recognise that language enables people to understand one another, celebrate diversity and build relationships across communities and countries.

Learning French encourages children to become confident communicators who are willing to take risks, listen carefully and persevere when faced with new challenges.

Inspired by our Catholic faith and Catholic Social Teaching, we help children understand that every language represents people who deserve dignity, respect and understanding. Through learning another language, children develop greater appreciation of different cultures while recognising that we all belong to one human family.

Ultimately, we want children to understand that learning a language is not simply about speaking differently.

It is about seeing the world differently.

Implementation

Our French curriculum provides children with a progressive and enjoyable introduction to language learning, building confidence, knowledge and communication skills over time.

Lessons are engaging, practical and interactive, encouraging children to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through songs, games, conversation, stories and meaningful contexts.

Children learn essential vocabulary and grammatical structures while also developing accurate pronunciation and increasing confidence in speaking aloud. They are encouraged to experiment with language, recognising that making mistakes is a natural and valuable part of learning.

Communication sits at the heart of every lesson. Children regularly practise speaking and listening, working collaboratively and developing the confidence to express themselves in another language.

Alongside language learning, children explore aspects of French culture, traditions, geography and everyday life. These experiences help children appreciate similarities and differences between communities while developing respect for cultures beyond their own.

Our curriculum encourages children to make meaningful connections between French and English, recognising how languages are structured and how communication helps people understand one another.

The learning environment is supportive and inclusive, ensuring that every child feels able to participate, contribute and enjoy learning a new language regardless of their starting point.

Throughout the curriculum, children are reminded that learning another language is an act of curiosity, openness and respect for others.

Impact

The impact of our French curriculum is reflected in confident children who enjoy communicating and are excited to learn about the wider world.

Children develop increasing confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French while building resilience and perseverance through regular practice.

Children become curious about different cultures and develop an appreciation of the richness and diversity of the global community. They understand that languages connect people and that communication builds understanding.

Children grow in confidence because they experience success in speaking another language. They become increasingly willing to take risks, listen carefully and express themselves with accuracy and enthusiasm.

Our children recognise that learning French has helped them become better communicators, more thoughtful listeners and more open-minded learners.

Most importantly, children leave St Bernard's understanding that every language tells a story.

Every culture has something to teach us.

Every person deserves to be understood.

They discover that communication is one of the greatest gifts we can share with one another.

Because when we learn another language, we do more than learn new words.

We build new friendships.

We broaden our horizons.

We begin to see the world through someone else's eyes.

That is what it means to be a language learner at St Bernard's.

This is how we continue becoming the school God wants us to be.

"Every nation, tribe, people and language."
