Geography – Discovering Our Place in God's World

Our world is full of extraordinary places, remarkable people and incredible natural beauty.

Every landscape, every community and every environment tells a story about the world we share and our responsibility to care for it.

At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that Geography is about much more than learning where places are.

It is about understanding people.

It is about understanding our planet.

It is about recognising that we all have a responsibility to care for God's creation and for one another.

Through Geography, children discover not only the world around them but also the important role they can play in protecting it for future generations.

Intent

Our intention is to develop curious, knowledgeable and responsible geographers who understand the relationship between people, places and the environment.

We want every child to develop a strong understanding of the local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world while appreciating the diversity of people, cultures and environments that make our planet unique.

Our Geography curriculum encourages children to ask thoughtful questions about how the world works, why places are different and how human choices influence both people and the environment.

Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching and the message of Laudato Si', we encourage children to understand that caring for creation is both a privilege and a responsibility. They learn that every person deserves access to clean water, food, shelter, education and a safe environment, and that we all have a part to play in building a more just and sustainable world.

Ultimately, we want children to recognise that geography is not simply about understanding the world.

It is about understanding our responsibility within it.

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is carefully sequenced to build children's geographical knowledge and understanding progressively throughout their primary education.

Children explore a wide variety of local, national and global locations, developing secure knowledge of physical and human geography while learning how places are connected through people, trade, climate and the environment.

Learning is enquiry-based and encourages children to ask questions, investigate evidence, interpret maps, analyse data and draw thoughtful conclusions about geographical issues.

Fieldwork plays an important role in helping children develop first-hand understanding of the world around them. Through visits, local studies and outdoor learning, children observe, measure, record and investigate geographical features within their own community before extending their understanding to the wider world.

Children develop key geographical skills including:

• map reading and interpretation
• fieldwork and observation
• geographical enquiry
• data collection and analysis
• comparing places and environments
• understanding physical and human processes.

Our curriculum makes meaningful connections with Catholic Social Teaching throughout. Children explore themes such as stewardship, sustainability, climate change, global inequality, migration, environmental responsibility and the dignity of every person. They are encouraged to consider how their own choices can contribute to caring for God's creation and supporting communities around the world.

The work of our Laudato Si' Team strengthens these messages beyond the classroom, providing opportunities for children to lead environmental projects, promote sustainability and inspire others to care for our common home.

Communication is central to Geography. Children discuss global issues respectfully, consider different perspectives and develop the confidence to express informed opinions supported by evidence.

Throughout every unit, children are encouraged to move beyond simply asking "Where is this place?" to exploring "Why does this place matter?" and "How can we help care for it?"

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is reflected in children who understand both the beauty of our world and their responsibility to care for it.

Our children develop secure geographical knowledge alongside the ability to investigate, question and think critically about the world around them.

Children become increasingly confident in understanding how physical and human geography shape communities, environments and people's lives. They recognise that local actions can have global consequences and that everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future.

Children appreciate the diversity of cultures, traditions and ways of life found across the world. They celebrate difference, show respect for others and understand that every person deserves dignity, opportunity and hope.

Children develop a growing sense of stewardship, recognising that caring for God's creation is an important expression of both faith and citizenship. They understand that protecting the environment is not simply an environmental issue but also a moral responsibility.

Our children leave St Bernard's with a strong sense of belonging—not only within their own community but also within the wider world. They understand that they are part of one global family and that their actions can make a positive difference to others.

Most importantly, they leave with curious minds.

Compassionate hearts.

Responsible voices.

And a deep commitment to caring for the world they have been entrusted to inherit.

Because Geography is not simply about exploring places.

It is about learning to love them.

It is about learning to care for them.

It is about discovering our place in God's world.

That is what it means to be a geographer at St Bernard's.
