Mathematics – Thinking Like Mathematicians
Mathematics helps us make sense of God's world.
It enables us to recognise patterns, solve problems, think logically and understand the remarkable order that exists within creation.
At St Bernard's RC Primary School, we believe that mathematics is about much more than numbers.
It is about learning to think.
Our mathematics curriculum is built around one clear ambition:
Every child can become a successful mathematician.
Through high expectations, excellent teaching and a commitment to mastery, we help every child develop confidence, resilience and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts that will support them throughout their lives.
Intent
Our intention is to develop confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who understand mathematics deeply and are able to apply their knowledge confidently in a wide range of contexts.
We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics when teaching is carefully sequenced, concepts are understood in depth and children are given the time they need to think, explore and make meaningful connections.
Rather than rushing through content, we prioritise secure understanding.
Our curriculum is built around the principles of Mastering Mathematics, ensuring children develop:
- Fluency through secure understanding rather than memorisation alone.
- Reasoning by explaining, justifying and proving their thinking.
- Problem solving by applying mathematics creatively in unfamiliar situations.
- Confidence to persevere when learning becomes challenging.
- Curiosity to explore patterns, relationships and mathematical structures.
Inspired by the NCETM Teaching for Mastery approach, we believe that mathematics should be ambitious and accessible for every learner. Children learn together, supported through carefully designed teaching rather than separated by fixed perceptions of ability.
We want every child to leave St Bernard's believing:

Implementation
Our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced using the principles of the NCETM Teaching for Mastery framework.
Learning is organised into small, coherent steps that allow children to develop secure conceptual understanding before moving on to increasingly complex ideas. Each new concept builds carefully upon prior learning, enabling children to make strong mathematical connections over time.
Lessons are characterised by expert modelling, carefully structured questioning and opportunities for children to think deeply about mathematical ideas. Teachers encourage discussion, reasoning and explanation, helping children articulate not only their answers but also the thinking behind them.
Children regularly explore concepts using concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract notation. This progression enables pupils to build deep conceptual understanding while making mathematics accessible to all learners.
Fluency is developed through carefully planned practice that builds automaticity alongside understanding. Rather than relying on repetition alone, children are encouraged to recognise patterns, make connections and apply their knowledge flexibly.
Reasoning and problem solving form an integral part of every unit of learning. Children are challenged to explain their thinking, compare different methods, identify misconceptions and solve increasingly complex problems, developing confidence as independent mathematical thinkers.
Our youngest learners benefit from participation in Mastering Number, strengthening their understanding of number sense from the very beginning of their mathematical journey. This strong foundation supports future success across all areas of mathematics.
Teachers use responsive assessment throughout lessons to identify misconceptions, adapt teaching and ensure that every child receives the support or challenge they need. Additional support is provided through high-quality adaptive teaching, allowing children to remain fully engaged in ambitious learning alongside their peers.
Across every classroom, mathematics is viewed as a subject where mistakes are welcomed, perseverance is celebrated and thinking is valued above speed.
Impact
The impact of our mathematics curriculum is reflected in confident children who see themselves as capable mathematicians.
Children develop secure mathematical understanding because concepts are learned deeply rather than superficially. They build fluency alongside reasoning and are increasingly able to apply their knowledge confidently in unfamiliar contexts.
Pupils explain their thinking with clarity, using precise mathematical vocabulary and demonstrating increasing confidence in discussing different methods and strategies. They understand that there is often more than one way to solve a problem and appreciate the value of learning from one another.
Children approach mathematical challenges with resilience and curiosity. They persevere when faced with difficulty because they understand that mistakes are an important part of learning and that effort leads to improvement.
Our pupils recognise mathematics in the world around them. They identify patterns, solve practical problems and appreciate how mathematical thinking supports everyday life and future opportunities.
Most importantly, children leave St Bernard's with confidence.

They understand that mathematics is not about being quick.
It is about thinking deeply.
It is about making sense of the world.
