Mathematics Curriculum Intent
At St Bernard’s, our Maths curriculum is designed to help every child become confident, fluent and resilient in mathematics. Based on the principles of Maths Mastery and EEF research, it focuses on deep understanding, reasoning and problem-solving. Pupils learn through small, connected steps using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. Vocabulary, talk and reasoning are central to every lesson, helping pupils explain and apply their thinking. By the end of primary school, all pupils are fluent, reflective and flexible mathematicians, ready to use their skills in the wider world.
Ultimately, our Maths curriculum aims to develop pupils who are curious, confident and resilient, seeing mathematics not as a set of procedures, but as a creative, logical and empowering way to understand the world.
