Every 25 years, the Catholic Church holds a Jubilee Year, in which all members of the global Church family are called to participate and grow in faith and prayer life. This year’s theme is ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and in school we dedicated our first week of this half term to ‘hope through kindness’ ...
We began the week discussing the power of heartfelt compliments and played a lovely game, similar to musical chairs, whereby the children walked around the classroom and when the music stopped they had to leave a personalised compliment on the desk of one of their peers eg. 'You were really kind when...' or 'You worked really hard at...'
We filled our display board with different ways in which we can show kindness to others...
Considering kindness shown in the bible, we listened to, and wrote summaries of the parable of Zacchaeus, in which Jesus showed love and kindness to a very unpopular tax collector. Jesus explained that he had come to save all people, including the lost and the worst of sinners and Zacchaeus was transformed! He promised to change his ways right away and repay all of the people he had cheated. The moral of this parable is that God's love, forgiveness and salvation transforms people.
We worked in pairs, on the iPads, to investigate the kindness of strangers and researched information about the charity 'Shelter' discovering the wonderful service that they provide to homeless people across the country, giving hope to people in need of accommodation. Finally, we created a class poem about how we all work together to ensure that St. Bernard's is a place of kindness.
